Perlisten Audio Releases the World’s First THX® Dominus In-Ceiling Speaker

September 8th, 2023: CEDIA each year is a fantastic opportunity for brands to dazzle us with their latest and best home technology products, and this year we’re presented with a heavenly, architectural, high-end audio gift from Perlisten Audio: the world’s first THX® Dominus In-Ceiling Speaker. Technically we are gifted with 2, but the press release at the bottom of this article will cover the complete information.
Since the company’s inception, Perlisten has been winning awards and toppling THX® standards, specifically in the Dominus category with their S-series speakers, in-walls, and subwoofers.  At the same time, rabid audio fans endlessly questioned the possible next step, “when will Perlisten release an in-ceiling speaker, and if they do, will it be THX® dominus?”  Those questions are answered and the company has certainly delivered.
I first heard about these from a few dealers on AVS Forum as well as in an Audioholics interview with Eric Wiederholtz, Perlisten CTO, during Audio Advice Live 2023:

Next came the press releases from THX and Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity but the visceral size perspective of these gargantuan in-ceiling speakers was revealed by a fantastic content creator, videographer, and photographer, Woody’s Soundup.

And then, Gene from Audioholics proceeded to curl the massive in-ceiling speaker. Of course, this is necessary with all large speaker purchases.

Yes, that is the massive S3ic THX® Dominus in-ceiling speaker: 13.5″ diameter, 20.4 lbs.  I used to think an 8″ diameter in-ceiling was large, but I have now officially revised my low standards. This is the same thing my partner said to me when I asked her to marry me. Specifically, I’m referring to the standards, not the size situation. Violet HiFi is a family publication.

S3ic THX® Dominus In-Ceiling Speaker

Honestly, while the sheer size is impressive, it’s the fact that Perlisten packed a plethora of amazing technology and design from the flagship s-line into the S3ic in-ceiling speakers:

  • 28mm Beryllium dome tweeter
  • 28mm Textrme TPCD midrange mid-woofers
  • TPCD 7″ woofer

All of these make up their DPC-Array that, “delivers amazing accuracy, smoothness, and directivity control to handle the critical vocal range and delicate treble.”  If you’ve ever listened to any speaker in the Perlisten S-series, this claim is not smoke and mirrors marketing that ultimately falls flat. The S-series speakers truly are an engineering work of science and art that provide an unbelievable home cinema and music experience.

The S3ci also boasts a “4mm thick alumni back box for consistent sound with limited sound transmission into other rooms.”  The only question now is whether your dry-wall can handle a 20lb speaker but if you are installing this in a high-end home theater, you’ve likely thought through securely attaching the world’s finest and largest in-ceiling speakers into your fantastic movie zone.

Below is the official press release and after the amazing reviewers get their hands on these, our official review roundup will follow:

SEPTEMBER 8th, 2023 –

PERLISTEN AUDIO takes another major step forward, expanding the product offering with three completely new in-ceiling speakers. A perfect solution for any advanced home theater installation featuring Dolby Atmos, DTS-X and/or AÙRA 3D audio formats.

The new S-Series and R-Series in-ceiling speakers are all engineered utilizing advanced Comsol acoustical modeling and the result are some of the most technologically advanced in-ceiling loudspeakers available. Each model is tested to the highest standards and follows our strict engineering principles. All models are THX® Certified, the S3ic and R3ic are THX® Certified Dominus Surround, while the R2ic is THX® Certified Ultra Surround. All models feature proprietary technologies as seen throughout our products, providing full flexibility and true timbre matching.

“With the introduction of our new in-ceiling products, this truly makes us a “complete partner” to the custom integration channel. Our offering is nearly as complete as possible and again we are taking the lead presenting something extraordinary with our new flagship in-ceiling model S3ic,” says Dan Roemer, chief executive officer, PERLISTEN AUDIO. “It marks the first time a manufacturer is able to achieve THX Certified Dominus in an in-ceiling model, especially one designed for the largest private theaters of up to 6,500 cubic feet/184 cubic meters.”

The new S3ic and R3ic, which measure 13.5? in diameter (30.5 cm) and a depth of 7.7? (19.48 cm), are housed in a sealed aluminum enclosure with a proprietary waveguide, controlling directivity to ensure frequency response is consistent over a broad range of listening positions.. While the R2ic remains with an infinite baffle design, and the rear enclosure as optional.

PERLISTEN introduces the next generation patent-pending Directivity Pattern Control (DPC) waveguide with a reference axis at 30 degrees with a broader listening window of +/- 30 Vertical and +/- 55 Horizontal degrees. This new design allows for ideal coverage for most listening spaces.
