Online Specialty Platforms for Finding Used High-End Audio Equipment

In the vast digital landscape, there are several online platforms where you can embark on your quest for used high-end audio and home theater equipment. These platforms provide avenues for buyers and sellers to connect, enabling you to find the perfect gear for your needs. Let’s explore some of the prominent online platforms that can open doors to a world of audio and video treasures:

US Audio Mart

US Audio Mart advertises itself as “America’s largest free hifi/audio classifieds site.”  While I’m unsure if we could empirically validate that claim, they originally started in Canada (Canuck Audio Mart) and now receive over 250,000 audiophile unique visitors and post 700 hifi classifieds each week. US Audio Mart offers a comprehensive suite of classified listings from both audiophiles like yourself and also dealers nationwide.  For our international friends, they have sister sites in the UK/EU and Australia.

Navigating the site is a breeze, thanks to its user-friendly layout and intuitive search functionality. You can easily browse through different product categories and sort the classified ads from newest to oldest. Each listing displays essential details, including the type of equipment, asking price, location, and the presence of a photo or photos. Moreover, the site’s “advanced” search features allow for precise local hunting, allowing you to sort listings by specific states or other variables of your choice.US Audiomart Category Layout for Used High-End Audio

Creating an account on US AudioMart is a requirement if you wish to interact with sellers, but it also brings additional benefits. By creating an account, you gain access to features such as creating a watch list to keep track of your favorite items. This can be incredibly useful when you’re actively searching for specific gear especially since you will receive e-mails when your watched items’ prices change, are relisted, or delisted.

When pursuing ads on the site, sellers usually provide much more information than a nationwide classified such as:

  • Retail Price
  • Preferred payment methods
  • Shipping weight and the ability to ascertain a quote (although it’s important to note that sometimes the weight is for only 1 tower speaker vs. 2).
  • Seller information including seller feedback (find out what other audiophiles thought of their experience selling to or buying from this member.
  • Website of information on the audio equipment
  • Views of the ad as well as the length of time since the ad was posted

With many enthusiast sellers going the extra mile in their descriptions, you’ll likely find a decent amount of information already provided, potentially reducing the need for additional inquiries before making an offer.

Audiogon

Renowned for its reliability and robust features, Audiogon stands out as a go-to platform for audiophiles seeking used high-end audio equipment. Dubbed as the “well-established eBay for audiophiles,” by Jerry Del Colliano of Audiophile Review, the key feature that sets Audiogon apart is its bidding system. Sellers can list their items for auction, allowing buyers to participate in competitive bidding. This not only adds an element of excitement but also provides an opportunity to potentially secure a coveted piece of equipment at a favorable price. The bidding process is conducted within the platform itself, ensuring a secure and transparent transaction for both parties involved.

In addition to the bidding feature, Audiogon offers buyer protection to safeguard your interests. The platform provides a level of assurance by ensuring that payments are held securely until the buyer confirms the satisfactory receipt of the purchased item. This helps prevent fraudulent transactions and gives you peace of mind when engaging with sellers on the platform.

Like US Audio Mart, there are multiple options to discover your favorite pre-owned gear such as searching by category laid out alphabetically, browsing by brand, or using the open search functionality.  While US Audiomart offers an advanced search function, Audiogon focuses on filtered variables such as condition, price, buying options, and zip code.  Yet, it doesn’t stop there, Audigon stokes the obsession a bit by providing an opportunity to follow specific item searches and create alerts when an item is listed!  That way, for instance, if you’ve been coveting a lovely pair of Focal Kanta 2’s and secretly hoping someone eventually sells them for 50% off the retail price, Audiogon will drop that magic nugget in your inbox the moment someone lists them.

When exploring listings on Audiogon, you will usually encounter detailed descriptions and images provided by sellers along with the following platform-based details:

  • Seller Feedback (the last 12 months as well as all-time)Audiogon User Listing Information
  • How long they’ve been a member of Audiogon
  • Condition (0-1)
  • Payment methods accepted
  • Location
  • Package dimensions
  • Shipping cost and carriers (using your address if you’ve created a login)
  • Original Accessories
  • Policies (return policy if there is one)
  • The ability to ask a public question and view questions from others

Listings (that are different from regular auctions) also offer an opportunity of “Make Offer.”  Sellers can, in turn, counter, deny or accept your offer.  Finally, the listings also offer you the online store treatment of products similar to the product you searched (usually by brand) or the obligatory, “you also may be interested in” to widen your infinite used gear search list.

Audiogon goes beyond just being a marketplace; it fosters a sense of community among audio enthusiasts. The platform features an active forum where users can engage in discussions, seek advice, and share their experiences. This creates a vibrant community of like-minded individuals who are passionate about high-quality audio. You can tap into this community to gain valuable insights, seek recommendations, and connect with fellow enthusiasts who may be selling or seeking specific equipment.

Another valuable aspect of Audiogon is its Blue Book pricing feature. For an additional cost (4.99 per item or 9.99 per month unlimited), users can access the Blue Book, which provides pricing information and market values for various audio equipment. This resource can be particularly useful when determining the fair value of a product and negotiating prices. By having access to reliable pricing data, you can make informed decisions and ensure that you are getting a fair deal.  While this is likely the most organized and comprehensive price research, if you are unwilling to invest, there are other ways I’ll explain below to also ascertain that information.

Finally, it’s of note that Audiogon does seem to cater to the higher-end of budgets and focuses largely on the music, 2-channel audiophile crowd vs. the home theater audience.  While that shouldn’t dissuade you as a preowned product connoisseur, my anecdotal review is that prices tend to be higher than other sites.

AVS Forum

For audio enthusiasts seeking a forum-based approach to buying used high-end audio and home theater equipment, AVS Forum provides a dynamic platform for engaging with a passionate community. While AVS Forum primarily serves as a discussion forum, it also features a dedicated section for audio classifieds. Within this section, users can browse through listings posted by fellow members, creating a unique environment where buyers can connect directly with sellers. The forum format encourages open communication, allowing users to ask questions, seek advice, and negotiate deals directly within the threads. This level of interaction fosters a sense of trust and transparency among community members, making AVS Forum an ideal choice for those who value the insights and experiences shared by their fellow audio enthusiasts.

AVS Form Audio Gear Banner

It’s also important to note that a forum system promotes general dialogue on sale posts as well and there’s usually no shortage of opinions.  Regarding trust, you’re able to research users’ history of sales and interaction within the forum allowing you to conduct research on the legitimacy of the seller.

The classifieds section of audio gear is broken down into multiple categories.  Here are a few of the most popular sections:

Whether you’re looking for specific equipment or simply seeking guidance in your audio journey, AVS Forum offers a vibrant community of like-minded individuals eager to share their knowledge (and sell their gear) and assist you in finding the perfect high-end audio and home theater gear.

The Music Room

When it comes to finding used high-end audio and home theater equipment, The Music Room is a platform that specializes in providing a curated selection of used gear. With an extensive focus on the benefits of, “the industry’s first certified pre-owned program”, The Music Room ensures that buyers can purchase reliable and well-maintained used hifi equipment with a return policy.

Two of the standout features of the certified pre-owned program are professional inspection and testing and their return/warranty policy.  Before listing any item for sale, the team at The Music Room conducts comprehensive inspections and assessments to ensure the equipment’s functionality and performance. This rigorous testing process helps eliminate any surprises or potential issues that buyers might encounter, giving them confidence in the quality of the gear they are purchasing.

They also offer a 14-day return policy that allows buyers to thoroughly evaluate the equipment within a specified period and return it if it doesn’t meet their expectations. This commitment to customer service reflects their confidence in the gear they sell and their desire to ensure a positive buying experience for their customers.

Navigating The Music Room’s website is intuitive and user-friendly. They provide detailed descriptions, specifications, and high-resolution photos of each item, enabling buyers to make informed decisions. Additionally, they often include information about the item’s history, such as whether it is a trade-in, ex-demo unit, or refurbished product and whether there is a service history, allowing buyers to assess its condition and value accurately.

When purchasing from The Music Room, buyers can also benefit from the expertise and knowledge of the team behind the platform. The Music Room employs audio enthusiasts and experts who are available to answer questions, provide guidance, and offer personalized recommendations based on individual preferences and requirements. This level of support is particularly valuable for those who may be new to the world of high-end audio and home theater, ensuring that they make well-informed choices.

It’s important to note that TMR also sells “factory authorized” gear which is well-differentiated in the titling but worth mentioning that not all products are CPO (certified pre-owned).  Finally, while the CPO program has benefits it also usually inflates the base pricing of the item.  You receive peace of mind and a 14-day return policy but in turn, pay the equitable cost to gain those benefits.

Reverb

Originally recognized as a platform for musical instruments, Reverb has evolved to become an inclusive marketplace that caters to the needs of audio enthusiasts seeking used high-end audio gear. What sets Reverb apart from other platforms is its unique feature that allows buyers to make offers directly through the site. This capability empowers buyers to negotiate prices, creating a dynamic and interactive buying experience. By engaging in direct communication with sellers and proposing offers, buyers have the opportunity to secure deals that align with their budget and preferences.

Reverb also distinguishes itself with its comprehensive 14-day return policy (see the link for the “Reverb Protection Program”). This buyer protection policy offers peace of mind during the purchasing process. It allows buyers to thoroughly evaluate the equipment after receiving it, ensuring that it meets their expectations and performs as described. If any issues arise or if the buyer is unsatisfied with the purchase, the return policy provides a reasonable window of time to initiate a return and receive a refund. This level of buyer protection adds an extra layer of assurance, making Reverb a trusted platform for acquiring used high-end audio gear.

Reverb’s website contains a user-friendly interface and intuitive search options. Buyers can easily filter their searches by various parameters such as brand, condition, price range, and more. While you may not find their home audio category easily (it’s not clear within their menu structure), there is a home-audio specific landing page:

Reverb Home Audio Landing Page

It’s also important to mention that Reverb’s used gear is mainly vintage audio equipment.  While it’s possible to discover delicious deals on newer equipment, the vintage picker will be well satisfied with Reverb’s offerings.

If you’re also interested in whether the used products listed on Reverb are a good value in comparison to previously sold goods, they provide the answer via a diamond icon on certain listings distinguishing it as a “great value.”  While I could not necessarily verify what triggers “great value,” it’s recommended to perform your own price comparison research to determine whether a pre-owned product is worth the price you want to spend.

Finally, Reverb’s seller rating system and user reviews contribute to the overall trustworthiness of the platform. Buyers can assess the reputation of sellers based on feedback and ratings from previous transactions. This helps establish a sense of credibility and reliability, enabling buyers to engage with confidence.

HiFi Shark

Unlike traditional marketplaces, HiFi Shark is a specialized search engine that scours the web for listings from various online sources, aggregating them in one convenient location. This comprehensive approach allows users to cast a wider net and explore a multitude of listings from different platforms and websites, expanding the possibilities for finding the perfect piece of equipment.  I found this site a bit later in my own audio journey and it is an incredible time-saver instead of running through your nightly roundup of navigating individual sites to acquire that coveted piece of audio bliss.

HiFi Shark provides users with powerful search capabilities, allowing them to refine their searches based on specific criteria such as brand, model, condition, location, and price range. This level of customization enables buyers to narrow down their options and focus on the gear that aligns with their preferences and budget. By presenting a consolidated view of listings from different platforms, HiFi Shark simplifies the search process, saving valuable time and effort.  As another note on this section, the international listings are also amazing in case you’re eager to compare the prices around the world or just in your country of origin.

The platform’s ability to display both current listings and expired/sold listings is particularly valuable. This feature offers historical pricing information and insights into market trends, empowering buyers to make informed decisions and assess the fair value of used equipment. Being able to analyze past listings and sales can help buyers gauge the competitiveness of current offerings and negotiate prices more effectively.

HiFi Shark’s user-friendly interface provides a seamless browsing experience. The clean layout and intuitive navigation make it easy to explore the available listings and quickly identify relevant options. Each listing includes essential details about the product, including pricing, seller, date listed, and a direct link to the source website. This direct linking feature ensures that users have access to the original listing and can connect directly with the seller for more information or to initiate a purchase.  It’s important to note that the database used to update these listings around the world occurs throughout the day, but sometimes a search will not show every listing on a particular site.

Finally, it’s strongly recommended to create an account like many of the other sites as it offers 2 great benefits: the ability to save searches and to receive e-mails when a new product is listed as part of your saved search.

General Marketplace and Classified Platforms

When it comes to online buying and selling, marketplace and classified platforms like Craigslist, eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and Mercari have gained widespread recognition and become household names. While these platforms cater to a wide range of products, they often have dedicated sections specifically for audio equipment. Exploring these platforms can open doors to a treasure trove of used high-end audio gear, presenting you with a diverse array of listings from both individuals and businesses.

Craigslist, known for its localized approach, allows you to browse listings within your specific region or city. This local focus can be advantageous as it enables you to connect with sellers in close proximity, facilitating easy inspection, and potential in-person transactions. While Craigslist’s interface may appear simplistic, it is precisely this simplicity that has contributed to its popularity, making it an ideal platform for both buyers and sellers to connect.  It’s also important to note like many classifieds and buyer-to-buyer connective platforms, scams do exist often.  With this approach, it’s strongly recommended that users physically inspect and test high-end audio and home theater equipment.

eBay, on the other hand, offers a vast global marketplace where users can find audio equipment listings from around the world. With eBay’s extensive reach, you gain access to an expansive selection of used high-end audio gear, often with the option to bid on items through auctions. eBay’s reputation system and buyer protection policies provide an additional layer of security, instilling confidence in the purchasing process.  eBay is much more similar to other audio specialty marketplaces where creating a profile allows you to monitor a cultivated watchlist of items.  After creating the watchlist, you can opt to receive notifications about new listings, when listings end, and at times, sellers will provide you and other watchers with a deal to purchase a product at a lower price than the initial listing. While eBay provides significant buyer protection, it’s important to research a seller’s previous transactions and feedback to ascertain whether the seller is legitimate.  Finally, it’s important to note that eBay collects state tax on every transaction of pre-owned gear so even if you discover a great deal, add your state’s tax number to the final price, unless you live in one of those amazing states that don’t believe in sales tax.

Ebay Watchlist high-end audio item

Facebook Marketplace has emerged as a popular avenue for local buying and selling within communities. Leveraging the power of social media, Facebook Marketplace allows users to discover audio equipment listings posted by individuals within their geographical network. The advantage of using this platform is the potential for more personalized interactions, as you can message sellers directly and inquire about the condition, history, and specifications of the gear.  Like other listing sites, there is a rating system for sellers and it’s imperative to perform some due diligence in researching the seller’s history.  Usually connecting directly with the seller and asking questions about the product’s condition, why they are selling, and asking if you can listen or test will parse out potential scams.  Facebook also provides a buying and selling guide for the best marketplace experience. Personally, I’ve been successful with offloading gear on this platform but I’ve heard and read about stories where sellers will stop responding, advertise something that’s not in as good of condition as the pictures show, or even change the price at the last minute.  You have the ultimate power as the buyer to decide if you want to purchase or not.  It’s absolutely not advised to pay a seller prior to purchase unless you have some type of buyer protection i.e. Paypal goods and services or Facebook Checkout Purchase Protection.

Mercari is a growing online marketplace that has gained popularity for its user-friendly interface and ease of use. While Mercari encompasses a wide range of products, including audio equipment, its streamlined search functionality enables users to quickly narrow down their options. By leveraging Mercari’s secure payment system and buyer protection policies, you can feel confident about your purchases and have peace of mind during transactions. Personally, I’ve rarely found much high-end equipment on Mercari or Offerup, but if you are addicted to the hunt, it’s another place to exercise your scavenger skills.

The Plethora of Facebook Groups Dedicated to High-End Audio and Home Theater

In addition to Facebook Marketplace, another avenue to explore for finding used high-end audio and home theater equipment is Facebook Groups. These specialized groups bring together enthusiasts who share a passion for audio/video and provide a platform for buying, selling, and trading equipment within a community setting. By joining relevant Facebook Groups, you gain access to a network of like-minded individuals who are knowledgeable about audio gear and may have listings or recommendations to share.

One of the advantages of utilizing Facebook Groups is the sense of community they foster. These groups often have members who are passionate about audio and eager to connect with fellow enthusiasts. By engaging with the community, you can tap into a wealth of expertise, seek advice on equipment, and even gain insights into upcoming deals or rare finds.

Facebook Groups also offer the advantage of more personalized interactions and direct communication with sellers. Unlike traditional marketplace platforms, the social nature of Facebook allows for immediate messaging and real-time conversations. This facilitates a higher level of engagement, enabling you to ask questions, request additional photos or videos of the equipment, and build rapport with sellers to ensure a smooth and trustworthy transaction.  Many times, other members will also vouge for a seller or it’s possible to research their post and sale history to gain important references.

Within these groups, you’ll find dedicated sections or threads specifically for buying and selling audio equipment. Members can post listings, including detailed descriptions, photos, and pricing information. This allows buyers to browse through a wide range of offerings, from vintage amplifiers to high-fidelity speakers, and engage directly with sellers to inquire about product details, condition, and negotiate deals.

Moreover, Facebook Groups often have a localized focus, allowing you to connect with sellers in your area. This local element can be beneficial for arranging in-person inspections, demonstrations, and pickups, adding an extra layer of convenience and assurance when purchasing used audio equipment.

This is likely exceptional bias but I believe that I personally belong to one of the best local audio/video FB groups in the US: DC Area Audiophiles & High End Home Theater Enthusiasts. I’ve bought and sold through this group and not only are the sellers reputable, they are passionate about the hobby and therefore enjoy that you will love their previously owned equipment.  There’s a strong sense of community of enthusiasm and sellers (I personally can attest to this) will offer others amazing deals on equipment.  This local group also provides multiple dealer incentives where retail audio dealers will offer members access to products and prices that are not available to the general public.

Even with the added trust, it remains important to exercise due diligence by thoroughly researching the seller’s reputation, reading reviews, and reviewing any relevant feedback or comments from previous buyers. Additionally, following the group rules and guidelines (make sure the group allows buying and selling), being respectful in your interactions, and adhering to any recommended safety precautions will contribute to a positive and secure experience.  Below is a non-exhaustive list of popular high-end audio and home theater FB groups:

If you are looking for other groups, it’s also valuable to join enthusiasts groups dedicated to specific brands.  These will also provide a selling/buying group experience but dedicated solely to a singular brand.

Local High-End Audio and Home Theater Dealers Trade-Ins or Used Products

While online platforms offer convenience and a vast selection, exploring local dealers can be another fruitful avenue for finding used high-end audio and home theater gear. Local dealers specializing in audio equipment often have dedicated sections or departments for pre-owned items, providing an opportunity to discover hidden gems within your community.

One of the significant advantages of visiting local dealers is the ability to physically inspect and audition the equipment before making a purchase. This hands-on experience allows you to assess the condition, build quality, and performance of the gear firsthand, ensuring that it meets your expectations and desired sound profile. Additionally, dealers often have knowledgeable staff who can provide guidance, answer questions, and offer personalized recommendations based on your specific needs and preferences.

Another benefit of purchasing from local dealers is the assurance of having a physical point of contact for any future concerns or servicing needs. Should any issues arise with the equipment, having a local dealer to turn to provides convenience and peace of mind. Additionally, local dealers may offer warranties or post-purchase support, further enhancing the overall buying experience.

Visiting local dealers also presents an opportunity to tap into the expertise and insights of the dealer and fellow enthusiasts who may be present. Interacting with knowledgeable staff and engaging in conversations with other customers can offer valuable information about the gear, recommendations for compatible components, and a deeper understanding of the audio landscape.

Keep in mind that local dealers may offer trade-in options, allowing you to upgrade your existing gear while minimizing costs. This can be particularly advantageous if you have equipment you no longer need or wish to replace.

To explore local dealers for used high-end audio and home theater gear, consider researching dealers in your area, checking their websites for information on pre-owned offerings, and reaching out to inquire about specific items you’re interested in. Visiting local dealers not only supports your local audio community but also provides an immersive and personal buying experience that can greatly enhance your satisfaction and confidence in your purchase.

The Outro

Whether you prefer the convenience and global reach of online platforms or the immersive experience of visiting local dealers or discovering local sellers via marketplace, these avenues provide outlets to unearth hidden gems, negotiate deals, and ultimately enhance your audio/video setup. By combining these various buying options, you can embark on an exciting journey to find the perfect used high-end audio and home theater gear, all while maximizing value and satisfaction in your limitless for audio and home theater excellence.
